On August 7, 2026, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation – CMEI issued a Notice of Intent for a maximum of $100 million to bolster the critical minerals workforce of America, advancing the vision of President Trump of re-establishing U.S. energy supremacy, redeveloping domestic supply chains in critical minerals, and minimising dependence on foreign adversaries when it comes to materials that fuel modern energy, manufacturing, and defence technologies.
The nationwide Providing Opportunities for Specialised Education in Critical Technologies – PROSPECT initiative will broaden educational possibilities and cultivate the skilled workforce required to support domestic manufacturing, processing, and recovery, along with the reuse of critical minerals. When it comes to the short term, PROSPECT intends to double the total number of graduates with degrees in mining, minerals and related supply chain technologies in a period of two years. PROSPECT will ultimately lead to the development of a new curriculum, instructional resources, financial aid programs, and additional incentives to foster steady expansion in these fields.

A strong domestic mining and minerals workforce is essential to powering America’s future, strengthening our national security, and ending our dependence on foreign adversaries for the materials that underpin modern energy, manufacturing, and defense. Through the PROSPECT initiative, the Department is investing in the next generation of American engineers, scientists, and skilled workers who will help unleash American energy and ensure the United States remains the world’s leading energy powerhouse.”

It is worth noting that the United States is experiencing acute labour shortages in the critical minerals and materials supply chain that limit the nation’s capacity to satisfy growing demand when it comes to the resources that are foundational to energy, sophisticated manufacturing, and national defence.
Apparently, the DOE estimates that the U.S. will need a few 6,000 new engineers in the mining sector alone in the next decade, while shortfalls in materials science, processing and recycling keep hindering initiatives to shore up domestic supply chains.
PROSPECT will help fill these employment gaps by offering scholarships, financial support, and other efforts to enhance higher education programs in critical minerals as well as related technologies. By making investments today in American students, the program is going to guarantee that the United States has the labour force necessary to responsibly cultivate domestic mineral resources and safeguard the energy future of the country.
