FedEx Corp. and Dexterity Inc., an enterprise physical AI company that develops intelligent robots to perform specialised industrial work, on July 30, 2026 announced an expanded collaboration to scale up Foresight world model and Mech trailer loading systems from Dexterity at the FedEx Hagerstown Hub in Maryland. The setting-up in Hagerstown stretches the program beyond the test site, which is utilised for validating the technology, and comes after a long period of joint development and testing as well as operational validation. This permits production at a much larger operational scale while still focusing on enhancing safety, uniformity, and productivity.
It is well to be noted that loading trailers is still one of the most physically taxing and complex processes in parcel logistics and is essential for the operations of FedEx. It demands physical strength, stamina and real-time problem-solving skills. It is one of the most important areas where team members ask for additional support. Given the volume of thousands of trailers being loaded every day throughout the FedEx network in the U.S., this process has been challenging to automate via traditional solutions.
Through its partnership with Dexterity, FedEx is setting the bar for not just the performance of physical AI when it comes to autonomous trailer loading, but also how technology fits into wider hub operations, such as route planning, trailer allocation, upkeep, and workforce procedures.
Interestingly, the trailer loader from Dexterity is driven by Foresight, its world model for physical AI that executes decisions on the fly in dynamic environments. Foresight combines vision with depth and touch to anticipate the manner in which physical AI actions shape the world. In autonomous trailer loading, it reasons across all three spatial dimensions and time to optimize placement of standardised shipments for space, stability and speed over a broad spectrum of operating scenarios. Foresight powers the dual-armed superhumanoid robot rom Dexterity – Mech, which is built for heavy industrial tasks, but small enough to work inside trailers.
