The U.S. Department of Energy – DOE Office of Critical Minerals and Energy Innovation – CMEI on August 20, 2026, announced the allocation of $500mn for seven selected projects to boost critical mineral and material processing, battery supply chains and recycling capacity in the US. The projects selected support the agenda by the President to solidify America’s domestic critical minerals and battery supply chains, minimise reliance on foreign sources, improve national security, and accelerate American energy dominance, consistent with the Executive Order of the President – Unleashing American Energy.
According to Chris Wright, the US Energy Secretary, “For too long, America has depended on foreign actors for critical materials essential to modern life that underpin our economy, energy security, and national security. President Trump is reversing that dependence by securing our critical supply chains, unleashing American industry, and bringing critical materials production and processing back to the United States.”
As per Audrey Robertson, Assistant Secretary of Energy, “DOE is taking decisive action to secure the critical supply chains necessary to power our nation. These projects underscore DOE’s commitment to driving innovation, reducing reliance on foreign sources, and promoting American energy dominance.”
This is the third competitive funding opportunity from Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling programmes of the DOE supporting projects to advance battery materials processing and recycling as well as manufacturing.
This includes demonstration projects, commercial-scale facility construction, and retrofitting or retooling when it comes to the present facilities.
It is worth noting that critical minerals and materials are indeed of importance to American industry, energy production along with national security. Building domestic capacity will enable to make sure that the resources America requires are processed, manufactured and recycled within the US itself.
