Lam Research has gone ahead and opened the largest warehouse in the US with a 470,000-square-foot logistics hub in order to strengthen the semiconductor supply chain and also support demand for AI-enabled tech.
It is worth noting that the Livermore, California, facility increases the ability of Lam to move critical parts, respond to shifts in demand, and support customers faster and more predictably.
The facility is over 10 acres, or 4.4 hectares, under one roof, about the size of 8 football fields, with sufficient space to park 2,000 cars and inventory retrieval times that are 12x faster than existing systems.
For Lam, this velocity is more than just speeding up moving parts. It’s about creating an operating model that can scale and adapt reliably as customer needs change.
According to Karthik Rammohan, Lam Senior VP of Global Operations and Enterprise Solutions at the opening ceremony, “This warehouse demonstrates Lam’s commitment to investing in the U.S. as part of our global operations strategy. We have centralized Lam’s California logistics operations into one hub so we can move faster, plan better, and respond to our customers with the speed and accuracy they expect. That is what resilient operations look like in practice, and that is what our customers need from us right now.”
Lam’s Big Push in the U.S. Semiconductor Supply Chain
Lam marked the warehouse opening at a September 28 ribbon cutting ceremony with Karthik Rammohan, Lam Senior VP; State Sen. Jerry McNerney; Livermore Mayor John Marchand, as well as Katie Marcel, CEO of Innovation Tri-Valley, along with employees and DHL partners who will assist to manage the site.
The new warehouse cements Lam’s long-standing presence within California’s semiconductor ecosystem. The project is expected to create more than 200 jobs by 2027 and will complement the company’s network of R&D, manufacturing, logistics, and office space throughout northern California.
The location also gives exposure to Silicon Valley’s deep talent pool, established suppliers, and the wider semiconductor ecosystem. The warehouse will support Lam’s high-volume manufacturing plant in Livermore and pilot product development at world-class labs at the nearby Fremont headquarters of the company.
Operational Velocity at Scale
One important feature of the Livermore facility is that it consolidates Lam’s California logistics operations into one strategic location.
As per the director of Lam’s U.S. Warehouse Operations, Troy Rainey, “With all operations under a single roof, we can create more agile and efficient operations.” This enables us to rapidly reallocate resources as demand and business priorities shift, while eliminating the costs and inefficiencies associated with moving people and materials between multiple facilities.
Flexibility is a key factor in a market where customers require suppliers who can react fast to shifting build plans, technology ramp-ups, and demand signals. A nearby metrology laboratory further enhances Lam’s outbound delivery responsiveness along with regional R&D support.
Warehouse automation saves time on inventory retrieval
At the center of the facility is a 40,000-square-foot automated storage and retrieval system having 15 robots that minimize part retrieval time from 6 minutes to less than 30 seconds.
The system includes roughly 150,000 storage bins that can accommodate over 500,000 unique part numbers. This sophisticated automation solution will put logistics in a strong position in order to support substantial growth in the future while optimizing space utilization.
