AI Summary

Initial stages of preparation are on for a 1mn sqft. retail distribution facility by Amazon located in Norwich, Connecticut.

It is worth noting that the Bluewater Property Group, which is collaborating with Amazon, the e-commerce giant, on the project, said the Norwich center is anticipated to be a first-mile facility. Elena Rossi, a project manager at Bluewater, said that the first-mile facilities get goods and then send them to sortation centers, known as middle-mile centers, before they go into last-mile centers, which fulfill orders to customers.

Apparently, this 1mn sqft. retail distribution facility by Amazon would have high-tech sortation equipment so as to keep bulk items for order fulfillment down the supply chain. Rossi said at a meeting of Norwich’s Inland Wetlands, Watercourses, and Conversation Commission earlier in August 2026 that the facility will pick, pack, and ship goods to localized delivery centers and that too on a 24/7 basis.

Interestingly, the site is one of two facilities in the state in early development, the other being a fulfillment facility located in Killingly, the company said. Amazon said it has not announced scheduled opening dates for both the facilities.

The fact is that network growth is nothing new when it comes to Amazon, and this includes the East Coast too. The company is in the early stages of planning a 4 million-square-foot operations facility located in Holbrook, New York.

Amazon confirmed that it will invest $1 billion in the project, which, according to the e-commerce giant, is going to create 1,000 full-time jobs.

The e-commerce giant also said that it is going to open a 3 million-square-foot robotics fulfillment center located in North Carolina in 2026 and rework multiple facilities within Florida so as to convert them into fulfillment sites.

Elsewhere, Amazon is scheduled to start work in August 2026 itself. It is going to be in a 1.2 million-square-foot distribution center in Terrell, Texas, and also a sorting warehouse of about 250,000 square feet located in Georgetown, Texas.
